I'm trying to create a bootable Operating System Install CD. I
want to be able to install MSDOS 6.22/Win95/Win98/WinME etc
from CD, but I can't run setup.exe from an altenate location to
the boot disk for MSDOS 6.22, as it always comes up with the
*** MS-DOS 6.x was designed to be installed via a floppy
drive. You may use either drive A or B, but not a CD-ROM, to my
knowledge.
Does the DOS install have to be from a CD-ROM? Cannot you do
it from a
floppy drive with the particular setup you have in mind?
An alternative would be to set up a DOS system, put the drive in
another system that has CD Writing capabilities, and burn the entire
drive to a CD-R (make sure all hidden files are accessible). Then
you should be able to boot up with a Win-98 Boot disk with CD-ROM
support and XCOPY the entire contents of the CD onto a freshly
formatted hard drive (just make sure you set all the copied files
ATTRIB -R, since they will be read-only coming off the CD.)

If you zip the entire DOS system, unzipping it will restore all of the
original attributes intact. Only minimal disk preparation utilities (fdisk,
format, sys, etc.) and an unzipper actually need to be on the boot disk.

Do you really think it's necessary do answer on a thread dated from
June 18th this year? He's either got a solution or it's of no more
inter- rest.
Nevertheless I dug deep into some old boxes and found my 3 original
disks for Dos6.22 (german). Some files have to be expanded as described
in the file packing.lst prior to copying them without using setup.exe.
Setup.exe uses dossetup.ini which references presumably to the disk-
labels. (Later Mircsosoft installation disks could be put to identically
named folder. The setup used the folders then instead of floppys.)

To install MS-DOS, insert Setup Disk 1 in
drive A and press CTRL+ALT+DEL. This will
restart your computer and begin the Setup
program.
Or press ENTER to return to your command prompt.
Is there any way to do what I want?
Here I would have suggested to use http://www.nu2.nu . They use a quite
sophisticated way to compress most needed things on a floppy and expand
this comparable to linux levels onto a ram disk.
