Discussion:
How rewrite MBR in second disk?
(too old to reply)

I have an old Win 98 computer to restore with two hard drives. The
second drive has the "invalid media or Track 0 bad error after running
format d: on it. I have tried fdisk /mbr, but I doubt that it is
working on the second drive. Any ideas on a quick fix?

You can 'fdisk' the drive, it makes a good MBR.

fdisk/mbr only works on the first physical HDD detected by fdisk. You will
need to swap the cables (and reconfigure jumpers) to make the second HDD the
master and then boot from a floppy or CD to run fdisk/mbr. Although, since
it is the second HDD, fdisk/mbr is not needed since it is not the boot
drive.

Reformatting the drive should not have caused this error (unless interrupted
before it finished). Most likely this drive has reached the end of its life
or format did not finish. If you want to try to format and use it anyway,
you could try using fdisk to remove all partitions and then recreate a new
one and then format it. I strongly urge you to remove the good HDD during
this process.

Maybe the bios let us swap the drives a little bit quicker instead to swap
the cables or to reconfigure the jumper(to select master or slave) of both
(E)IDE-Drives.

Dave,
I would consider getting the manufacturer's hdd tool kit, and running
a low-level format and test the drive for sector errors.

Be aware it will overwrite all data.

If that is an issue, let us know.

It could also be the BIOS settings for that drive are
not set properly. See if it is set to LBA, and if not
then try setting it to LBA.
